The Power of Red

December 13, 2009 Leave a comment

I love red lips and red nails. So chic. So Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. Non? Unfortunately, when I have red nails and red lips around Christmas time, I feel completely, utterly, totally lame. Same for Valentine’s Day. Why is RED such a holiday colour? Think about it…even Remembrance Day – red poppies (for the Canadians out there) Even the Canadian flag! RED. No red nails around Christmas time, Valentine’s Day, Remembrance Day, or even Canada Day. Minus all those red dicatated holidays, I love my red nails and red lips, for the rest of the year. Russian Red from Mac is the lip colour of choice, whereas for the nails, I’ll do Big Red Apple from OPI.

I love this woman… :) :)

Bad Romance, more like Good Romance

OMG. Bad Romance. Lady Gaga. This is the video that converted me to become a Lady Gaga fan. Check it out. She’s phenomenal. All McQueen. So fantastic. Mmmm those shoes! The razor glasses in the beginning! I love it all! The concept is so awesome too…Lady Gaga in the Bath Hause of Gaga, getting abducted by supermodels and having the Russian mob bid on her. I love it, and I can’t stop watching it. Tell me you guys love it too.

Nanny Fine, So fine!

I love the Nanny. You remember that show, with Fran Drescher, in the late 90′s? I loved that show so much. I was so sad when it was over. Lately I’ve been watching reruns late at night, and it’s just so fantastic. Honestly, Fran Fine was one of my first and earliest style icons. Watching the show lately, I realized that a lot of the looks Nanny Fine sported around the house would totally work for women nowadays! It’s so completely Fall 09! Don’t believe me? Take a look at this blog, dedicated to Nanny Fine’s fashions. Nanny Fine’s over the knee boots are completely relevant to fashion today (Rodarte anyone?) She wore the most chic little skirt suits, very Chanel. I love her and can’t get enough of her. Nanny Fine, Fall 09. Totally rhymes. Totally true. Totally in love.

Got Love for Lady Gaga? I do.

I’ve had quite the love/hate relationship with Lady Gaga. Currently I’m in the love stage, and think it’ll stay this way for quite some time. When she first came out, I thought she was incredible. I loved how different she was from all the blonde bimbos in the music industry. But then…I saw her in the muppet outfit and was thoroughly irritated. I thought she was a complete idiot that was wearing stupid shit, not because she liked it, but purely to be different. It didn’t help when I saw her wear a mask to an interview, which muffled her voice making it impossible to hear her, or understand what she was saying. At that point, I thought she was completely obnoxious. I figured she should of started off being that much of a whack job, if it was genuine. I thought that she was simply pulling this shit to get people talking. But then it happened. The love. I saw her Bad Romance video, and just like that, I was converted, I was a fan. I started researching her and gained the utmost respect for her. She truly is unique and different. She’s not just putting on an act; it’s all her. Perhaps since she’s gained fame, she’s gained a larger budget to express herself artistically the way she wants. She’s very tuned into the fashion scene; I love that she wore an Academy Art student design in her Poker face video. That gave her serious street cred. This girl has done her research. Did you know that she’s called Lady Gaga, because of Queen’s song “Radio Gaga”? Apparently she’s a huge Freddie Mercury fan, which I absolutely love! Don’t even get me started on how much I love that she wore Alexander McQueen in her Bad Romance video. That deserves an entire post of its own. [Okay must interrupt this blog post for one second...my best friend from Vancouver just called me to tell me he just got out of the Lady Gaga concert, where he was seated dead center, 3rd row...I'M SO JEALOUS!!! He said her shoes were unreal...*sigh*] Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Lady Gaga’s relevance in pop culture. She’s doing wonderful things; she’s literally our generation’s Madonna. She’s bringing fashion to the masses (ie McQueen in Bad Romance; none of my friends back home knew who McQueen was until they watched that video). And I love what she wore to meet the Queen – so totally, utterly Gaga, and so much better than the crap Miley Cyrus wore. Mmm, and lastly, her hair bows, made of real hair, perfection. I’ve been trying to replicate this with my own hair for weeks now, without any luck.

Creepy Pageant Kids

Have you guys seen that Toddlers & Tiaras show? It’s completely creeeepy. Sick and twisted mothers glue eyelashes, hair extensions and nails to their poor little babies and parade them around to win cash prizes. The mothers are clearly living vicariously through their children, while the fathers…to be perfectly honest, I think they’re getting their sick kicks out of it. Check out this guy, he’s a “pageant dad”

And this guy is the one judging the little babies

This show is just honestly way too much. There are poor kids crying about the spray tanning booths, too scared to go in, but have to in order to have that perfect glow for the pageant! And then, flippers. You know when kids loose their front teeth? Well they have “flippers” to take care of that problem – fake front teeth, so that their smiles are pageant perfect. This show is seriously creepy.

Palermo’s style – always chic

I absolutely adore Olivia Palermo’s style. Granted she’s not an A list celebrity, she’s definitely got the style of one. She always looks chic beyond belief, put together, modern and classy. It doesn’t matter if she’s at work…

or at an event…

or just strolling down the street…

She simply always looks fantastic…maybe she should help Tyra out with her style…

Radiohead…me likey!

One of my favourite CD’s of all time, has got to be In Rainbows, by Radiohead. To be perfectly honest…I didn’t really know much, or anything, about Radiohead prior to listening to this album. I mean, yeah, I heard all my friends rant and rave about how great they were, but always figured they just weren’t my cup of tea…

And then it happened. My friend set up a photoshoot, and asked me to model for it. It was a fun photoshoot; she was doing a romance timeline of a couple meeting. Anyway, I suppose, to set the mood, she decided to play In Rainbows. The first picture involved me and the very cute male model staring into each others eyes (that sounds SO corny), the next shot involved us holding hands, and so on and so forth. Meanwhile, all I could focus on was the amazing music that was playing.

The next day, when everyone was talking about the photoshoot, all I wanted to know about was that music that I couldn’t get out of my head. They laughed at how little I seemed to know about music, and told me it was Radiohead. I was obsessed from that point on. I kept repeating the lyrics to one song in particular, “All I Need”. I kept repeating the lyrics “I’m in the middle of your picture…” What a great song to play during a photoshoot, no?

Anyway, the entire album is just fantastic, great enough to turn anyone into a Radiohead fan. Definitely give it a listen if you haven’t already.

Someone get Tyra a stylist, ASAP

Tyra Banks has got to be one of the worst dressed females out there. I can understand that occasionally a prominent female in the public eye may occasionally get it way wrong, and land herself on the “worst dressed lists”, but Tyra Banks is consistently poorly dressed. It doesn’t matter if she’s on the red carpet…

or on her talk show…

or just hanging out…

She looks as though she shops at Wet Seal! There’s nothing chic about this woman; she always manages to look cheap and tacky. Her clothes lack any sophistication or class. You can just tell by looking at her clothes that they’re lacking in the quality department. C’mon Tyra…you can do better than this. This is not “fierce”.

Cutesy Fixie!

I love this girl!!! She looks so great with her bike! If I rode bikes this is what I would want to look like. I love her leggings opposed to the rolled up jeans that hipsters sport with their bikes. Typically, I HATE when leggings are worn without longer tops to cover up the bum, but for her, it totally works. I wish I had talked to her and found out more about her…looking at this picture I feel like I want to know where she’s going and what not…

Rocking the Glasses

December 9, 2009 Leave a comment

Saw these women around the Financial District, and was so drawn to them. They looked very put together, and had lovely smiles. What I liked about both of them in particular was that they were both wearing glasses, and totally rocking them. I have glasses, beautiful Ferragamo glasses, but I always wear my contacts…I just never feel confident enough to rock them they way these women do. Maybe I’ll use them as my inspiration to wear my glasses tomorrow…
